"Bright" is the second novel by Laura Susan Johnson, author of "Crush."
Bright concerns a troubled gay couple in rural Idaho whose relationship is affected by illness, alcoholism, and persecution within their own family. Reardon "Monty" Montgomery and Walter Yarbro fall in love the moment they meet, but they could not be more opposite if they had put it in special order. Monty is wild, a gypsy at heart, while Walter, who is partially blind and in poor health, is a shy homebody. In spite of all this, they cannot live without each other, and decide to get married. If this mismatch made in heaven can move past their differences and difficulties, their next wish is to have a family together. Their close friend Natalie agrees to help them, and moves to Idaho to live with them. None of this sits well with Walter's stepmother, who has lingered in the family after the death of Walter's father.
Monty, Walter and Natalie endure disappointment and tragedy as they struggle to build their family, but their troubles are only beginning...
